As part of a local tradition, the “Essen Light Weeks” have been a recurring theme for the city since the late 1920s. Using light art which illuminates the city centre with light motifs every year from November to January, the festival welcomes around
66 400 000 visitors each year and has become the second largest light art festival in Germany. Each year, around twenty international artists present sculptures, installations and 3D video mappings projected onto historical buildings, thus demonstrating the city’s rich heritage.
